Good Afternoon All,
CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations go out to Mr. Jason Parra. He auditioned and made the NC All-State Band this past weekend. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!!!!!! Great job!
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY: We, in conjunction with Concord High School’s Band, will be hosting a dinner and concert featuring the Rowan County Big Band. The Rowan County Big Band is a great ensemble and all who come out are sure to have a great time. This event will take place on 4 April 2020 at McGill Baptist Church in Concord. The event will start at 7:00 p.m.
Anyone interested in attending this event will need to go to http://www.concordhsbands.com/big-band-fundraiser.html to reserve their seats. On the registration form, attendees will put in how many guests they plan to bring with them to ensure we have enough plates for the dinner.
There is no upfront cost. What we ask is that you provide a monetary donation to our programs. Donations will be taken during the dinner/concert.
What do we need from you……..
In order for this event to be a successful venture, we must have your participation in pushing out this information. I have attached the flyer to this nesletter. Please consider e-mailing this out, posting on your social media, posting the flyer at your workplace, etc. to get the work out. We want to get a big number of folks to attend!!!!!Rowan Big Band Fundraiser - 4 April 2020
A post has gone out on Facebook on the MP Band, Winterguard, and Colorguard pages.
As we get closer, we will be asking for some parent and student helpers to help during this event. More details to follow………
JAZZ BAND: We will be rehearsing every Thursday, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m., at the middle school. If you were not able to come last week, but you were planning on participating, please be there this week. Remember, only those that will be dedicated and motivated need to show up. If you are going to be inconsistent in your attendance, this isn’t for you.
PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE: We have been invited to play the Arts Council Annual Breakfast in May. In order to prepare for this event we will begin rehearsing every Wednesday, 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. in the band room. Same logic applies to this ensemble as does the Jazz Band. Only those that will be dedicated and motivated need to show up. If you are going to be inconsistent in your attendance, this isn’t for you.
MOUNT PLEASANT BAND BOOSTERS: Next boosters meeting is 6 April at 6:30 p.m.
WINTERGUARD REHEARSALS: Please make sure you are staying up to date with information from Victoria via the BAND app. Rehearsals the next couple of weeks:
Monday, March 9th: Varsity and J. Varsity; 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 11th: Varsity; 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 12th: J. Varsity; 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 13th: J.V. Contest at Catawba Ridge, Varsity at WGI Charlotte
Sunday, March 14th: Varsity at WGI Charlotte (Finals)
SMARTMUSIC ACCOUNTS: All students who are currently in the band classes are required to have SmartMusic account. This system will be utilized to assess them in their playing of a variety of exercises and in the concert literature they are playing. It is also a practice tool. They were asked to have registered for this by the end of this week. If they have not registered, they need to do so now. Students will have assignments starting this week.
Instructions to establish account:
Open a Chrome browser and visit: https://admin.smartmusic.com/join
When prompted for an e-mail address, use an e-mail address that you check regularly (preferably the same one that is linked to your CutTime accounts).
When prompted for a class code, please enter: ZQY7V-MUXJU
THAT IS IT! Takes 10 seconds.
All students have a series of assignments to complete by 11:59 p.m. tonight (10 Mar). These assignments are assignments meant to get you used to using the system. If there is a technological issue causing you to get a low grade, send the assignment and I will listen to it and make necessary grade adjustments if need be.
Students will have weekly assignments to complete. These assignments are a mix a technique exercises, sightreading exercises, and excerpts from their music. Assignments not completed on time can be completed late, but the highest grade a student can make if assignments are late is a 70. Students who are not able to complete these assignments at home need to arrange times with me to complete them here. In order for students to be successful at these, they must take their instruments home and practice. Most assessments, with the exception of the sightreading excerpts, can be done multiple times until they feel it is a good run of that exercise/excerpt. Sightreading is different. Students will only be given 45 seconds to look at an excerpt then they must play it. Once they have performed the sightreading, it is automatically submitted. These assignments should not take long to complete if students are truly practicing.
All assessments are recorded. If a student makes a poor grade due poor performance or by just treating this as if this is a joke, those recordings can be sent to you, the parent/guardian at any time.
To use the system, students must use a laptop, tablet, or system such as a Chromebook. The best browser to use is Google Chrome. Folks with Apple products can download the “New Smartmusic” app.
