MARCHING BAND INFORMATION FOR 2020: I have hesitated on pushing out anything due to all the changes that have been occurring lately. The new school calendar has been voted on and passed. I am working some final touches to the information I want to push out. Expect this over the next few days…….
REMINDER: This is a quick reminder that if you have not completed the merit point form, you need to do so by the end of the day 15 May 2020. If you are having issues, you need to contact me. I can help you through it.
Understand this: This system is a system that most schools around this country do. We are one of the “last men standing” when it came to implementing this system. If you want the points, put them in. If you don’t, you are not required to do so. You do not have to complete this form. Those that do will get the things they have earned. Those that don’t won’t.
Points Collected as a Middle School : The only things that you are allowed to receive credit for in your middle school years are:
- Participation in the MPHS Marching Band; this includes parade performances
- Member of a Winter Marching Ensemble
- Participation in All District and All State Band
Forms that are sent in will be saved and eventually put into your Cut Time accounts for your records. That way, you can pull it up next year as a reference when you are filling out next year’s form.

MERIT POINT SYSTEM: In year’s past, our various awards, such as varsity letters and the pink honors cord, have been given out based on amount of years you have participated in the band program. It has become apparent that some changes to this will have to be made. From here on out, students will be awarded varsity letters, service bars, and the pink honors cords based on a merit point system. Why the change?
- It has become apparent that we have to do more to make the awarding of these items more meaningful and fair.
- Allows for anyone in the band program to earn points toward these items. Does not discriminate against those who do not march in marching band, etc.
- Places more emphasis on going above and beyond and excellence rather than just participation.

The video is 23 minutes long (I know……pretty long). Even though it is fairly long, I feel it is the best way to explain the form and to show how the merit point form is being used.
Attached is the merit point form. I need ALL band students to fill this out. Watch the video for explanation on how I need you to do this. If you do not do this, you will not be given any of these awards. Please e-mail back to me by 15 May 2020. - SENIORS: You are “grandfathered” into the system. Most of you may be close when it comes to having enough points to earn the pink cord, but most of you will not make it. If you have been a band participant through your Senior year, you will be awarded a pink cord this year.
- JUNIORS: You will also be “grandfathered” into the system. Most of you may be close when it comes to having enough points to earn the pink cord, but most of you will not make it. If you participate in band through your Senior year, you will be awarded a pink cord next year.
- SOPHOMORES: I will make an assessment of where you are at and make a determination.
- FRESHMEN: You are fully vested in the merit point program.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE: This award is for a deserving band parent/guardian that has gone above and beyond to help the program. If you have someone that you would like to nominate, please go to https://forms.gle/xFJ6P3nn3bzzmdg28 to submit their name and a brief reasoning for why you are nominating this individual. Deadline is 15 May 2020.
HOW WILL AN END OF THE YEAR AWARD CEREMONY GO: At this present moment of time, it is looking like we may have a hard time getting together to do a face to face ceremony. We will continue to look into ways we can make something happen. Please prepare yourself that a face to face gathering of this magnitude may not happen. If we are not able to gather at some point, then other plans will be made to celebrate you guys. May have to be a virtual setting, but we will make something happen.
WCU Summer Symposium: Every summer, Western Carolina offers a Summer Symposium for band students. This year, due to the current situation, they are going to be doing this online for FREE. You all need to get in on this. There are tracks for every section. I have attached to this e-mail a flyer with the dates and a PDF with information on how to logon to the webinars. YOU WOULD BE FOOLISH NOT TO PARTAKE IN THIS!!!!!!

Band Fees: Some still have balances due from their marching band fees, winterguard fees, etc. Please get this in ASAP. I greatly appreciate the ones who have gotten with me to turn in money. If you have money that is due that you need to turn in, it is imperative that you do this ASAP. Send me an email and I can meet you.

Microsoft Teams: We will be doing at least two live meetings per week. You have already been invited to attend these meetings through Microsoft Teams. It should send a notification to your school e-mail address when these invites occur. It will also show up in your calendars in your school e-mail. Class Meetings: Live meetings are back on. I have scheduled meetings up through May 14th, but these will be postponed until we are given the nod. I will be having meetings on the following days and times:
- 1st Block
- Meeting 1: Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m.
- Meeting 2: Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.
- 2nd Block
- Meeting 1: Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.
- Meeting 2: Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.

Assignments for the Week of 18 – 24 May: I have posted assignments in Cut Time for you to begin. There is some brand new material for you to do. This week, you will have a theory component and a few playing components. Follow the instructions of the assignment. If you do not have the required materials to complete a particular assignment, please let me know and I will make adjustments for you. With this new way of learning, and with the situation being what it is, we will all have to have a level of leniency and understanding.
SITUATION AS IS: Our Governor has just issued an order for us to be closed through the end of the school year. Your teachers are working hard to figure out ways to administer some sort of online virtual learning to administer to you. This is not easy and may come with some frustration. I ask you all to work through these items your teachers prepare for you. Do your very best.
For the Band: We will continue to post items on SmartMusic and in Cut Time for us to do. It is imperative that you remember your login information for both of those systems. If you do not, please let me know ASAP so I can help you. There will be a few things posted every few days for us to try to complete.
For Future Band Functions: With this new announcement made by our state government, there are going to be lots of questions. While we are in this hiatus, I am still doing lots of planning and work for the next year. Please be patient. We will be able to get back to normal if everyone is diligent and follow all precautions that have been set forth for your safety.
At this point of time, you and your family’s health are of the most importance. Please follow the guidelines that have been placed in order to curb this situation. If you follow these guidelines, the amount of time that we are dealing with this will shorten.
Parents-please make sure your children are checking their e-mails (school e-mails and e-mails associated with Cut Time and Smart Music) and their Cut Time accounts on a regular basis. Your children are going to be sent lots of information by all of their teachers. It is IMPERATIVE that they take some sort of onus in their own educational journey while we are experiencing these school closures. Please stay on top of your children. Force them to talk to you about what it is they are doing. Make them show you what they are doing. With the way they are having to do assignments, gather information, etc. while we are in our period of school closures, it cannot be solely on the teacher. If there is lack of information that a student is given that is making it difficult for a student to accomplish a particular task, students need to contact their teachers to gain clarification. This is great training for them for college, entering the workforce, etc.
