Good Morning All,

Hope all is well and that none of you incurred any damage due to the storms.  If any of you are in need of assistance on anything, please let me know so that way we can try to help you in any way we possibly can.

JAZZ BAND:  We had a great turnout last week for our first rehearsal.  We will be rehearsing every Thursday, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m., at the middle school.  If you were not able to come last week, but you were planning on participating, please be there this week.  Remember, only those that will be dedicated and motivated need to show up.  If you are going to be inconsistent in your attendance, this isn’t for you.

MOUNT PLEASANT BAND BOOSTERS:  Copies of the bylaws have gone out.  Any changes/additions/deletions/etc. that you would like to see need to be submitted to me by 22 Feb.  Votes on these changes will happen next week through a Google Form that will be sent out.  Next boosters meeting is 2 March at 6:30 p.m.

WINTERGUARD REHEARSALS:  Please make sure you are staying up to date with information from Victoria via the BAND app.  Rehearsals the next couple of weeks:

  • Monday, February 17th:  Varsity and J. Varsity; 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 19th:  Varsity; 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.

  • Saturday, February 22nd: Contest @ Mooresville H.S.

SMARTMUSIC ACCOUNTS:  All students who are currently in the band classes are required to have SmartMusic account.  This system will be utilized to assess them in their playing of a variety of exercises and in the concert literature they are playing.  It is also a practice tool.  They were asked to have registered for this by the end of this week.  If they have not registered, they need to do so now.  Students will have assignments starting this week.

  • Instructions to establish account:
    • Open a Chrome browser and visit:
    • When prompted for an e-mail address, use an e-mail address that you check regularly (preferably the same one that is linked to your CutTime accounts).
    • When prompted for a class code, please enter:  ZQY7V-MUXJU
    • THAT IS IT!  Takes 10 seconds.

All students have a series of assignments to complete by 11:59 p.m. tonight (17 Feb).  These assignments are assignments meant to get you used to using the system.  Grading for this week will be on the easy side.  After this week, the system takes over the grading.  The grading will be more stringent.  If there is a technological issue causing you to get a low grade, send the assignment and I will listen to it and make necessary grade adjustments if need be.

Students will have weekly assignments to complete.  These assignments are a mix a technique exercises, sightreading exercises, and excerpts from their music.  Assignments not completed on time can be completed late, but the highest grade a student can make if assignments are late is a 70.  Students who are not able to complete these assignments at home need to arrange times with me to complete them here.  In order for students to be successful at these, they must take their instruments home and practice.  Most assessments, with the exception of the sightreading excerpts, can be done multiple times until they feel it is a good run of that exercise/excerpt.  Sightreading is different.  Students will only be given 45 seconds to look at an excerpt then they must play it.  Once they have performed the sightreading, it is automatically submitted.  These assignments should not take long to complete if students are truly practicing.

All assessments are recorded.  If a student makes a poor grade due poor performance or by just treating this as if this is a joke, those recordings can be sent to you, the parent/guardian at any time.

To use the system, students must use a laptop, tablet, or system such as a Chromebook.  The best browser to use is Google Chrome.
