MP Band – Information for 30 March – 5 April 2020

Hope you are doing all.  Please read this e-mail in its entirety.  Parents-please make sure your children are checking their e-mails (school e-mails and e-mails associated with Cut Time and Smart Music) and their Cut Time accounts on a regular basis.

For us, I will be available (through Microsoft Team) at any time from 7:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  All of your assignments will be posted in Cut Time with instructions on how to complete them.  If you need my assistance, please e-mail me or link up with me via Microsoft Teams.  I will help you through.


Microsoft Teams:  We will be doing at least two live meetings per week.  You will be invited to attend these meetings through Microsoft Teams.  It should send a notification to your school e-mail address when these invites occur.  It will also show up in your calendars in your school e-mail.  In order to access Microsoft Teams, you need to know your login information for your school e-mail accounts, etc.  Please go to this website to learn how to do this: .


Class Meetings:  For this week, I will be having required meetings on the following dates/times:

Assignments for the Week of 30 March – 5 April:  I have posted assignments in Cut Time for you to begin.  This week, you will have a theory component and a playing component.  This is enough to get us started on this “new way of business.”  After this week, there will be more things added to your plate.  We will look at some other materials.  Follow the instructions of the assignment.  To access Cut Time and figure out how to access those assignments, please watch this video:


With all of this being said, if you do not have the required materials to complete a particular assignment, please let me know and I will make adjustments for you.  With this new way of learning, and with the situation being what it is, we will all have to have a level of leniency and understanding.


SITUATION AS IS:  Our Governor has just issued an order for us to be closed through May 15th .  Your teachers are working hard to figure out ways to administer some sort of online virtual learning to administer to you.  This is not easy and may come with some frustration.  I ask you all to work through these items your teachers prepare for you.  Do your very best.


For the Band:  Up to the point we left school, all band students had weekly assignments to complete in SmartMusic.  Unless you have assignments you did not complete prior to the school closure, I have stopped posting assignments until approximately 30 March.  Starting 30 March, I will continue to post items on SmartMusic and in Cut Time for us to do.  It is imperative that you remember your login information for both of those systems.  If you do not, please let me know ASAP so I can help you.  There will be a few things posted every few days for us to try to complete.


It is highly likely that I will be activated by the National Guard.  With this being said, I will do as much communicating as I can through e-mail as I can.  There may be periods of “radio silence.”  Please know this is not me ignoring you.  When I get a free moment of time, I will try to communicate to you.


For Future Band Functions:  At this present moment of time, there are lots of things up in the air.  Banquet will have to be rescheduled.  Pre-Season Marching Band events will need to be looked at.  While we are in this hiatus, I am still doing lots of planning and work for the next year.  Please be patient.  We will be able to get back to normal if everyone is diligent and follow all precautions that have been set forth for your safety.


At this point of time, you and your family’s health are of the most importance.  Please follow the guidelines that have been placed in order to curb this situation.  If you follow these guidelines, the amount of time that we are dealing with this will shorten.



LEADERSHIP TRAINING (NEW INFO HIGHLIGHTED):  Due to the fact we will not be back to school for a time period, we will not be able to conduct our leadership training as previously scheduled.  Fortunately for us, a really cool resource has opened up for us to utilize during this time we are away.  If you were planning to audition for a leadership position in the band program or if you are just interested in learning more about leadership, I want you to go to .  Here you will find the Leadership University.  Leadership University is an awesome online platform created by Scott Lang, who is one of the tops in the world when it comes to leadership training in the band setting.  He is highly sought after as a clinician and his resources are invaluable.


When you get to this site, you will first need to create an account.  There is a “Login/Register” button at the top of the screen.  Signing up is easy.


After you have created your account, you are going to register for three courses.  All three courses show up on the home page.  The first course is “Learning and Leading.”  Select this course.  There is a button that says “Purchase this course.”  Hit that button.  Do not worry………the course is free.  Go back to the homepage and select the second course; “Teaching and Team Building.”  Follow the same instructions as above.  Go back to the homepage.  Select the third item; “Leadership Team Application.”  Follow the same instructions as above.  Once you have selected the three courses, view your shopping cart.  You will need to make sure you are logged in to add the courses to your profile.  Complete the transaction.  Again, the courses are free, so they will cost you nothing.  It won’t ask for a credit card, etc.


Once you have registered for these courses, please begin going through them.  Pay close attention to the material in these courses.  It is awesome this resource opened up for us to use.  We were already going to be using a lot of his resources.  I have attached a pdf copy of the materials.  Use this copy to record your answers. I will be sending out information about doing some online meetings.




Please complete the written exercises for each lesson.  We will be going over this material.


If you do not feel this is important, do not come out for leadership training/auditions.  This is the first step to see what kind of leader you are.  Ask yourself these questions:


  • Are you someone who is proactive?
  • Are you always looking out for the good of the members of this organization?
  • Are you willing to work for the betterment of the group?
  • Are you dedicated to this program?




  • Are you someone who is just looking for a title?
  • Are you someone that is just going to do just enough “to get by?”
  • Are you someone that will just do this just to “build the resume?”


By completing the courses, you are at least showing some motivation and drive to being an awesome leader.  It shows you care enough about leadership and the betterment of the group to do what is necessary.  These are the people we need.


As we work through the school closure situation, I will come up with a battle plan to do leadership training and auditions.  Let this be the first step of your training.
